Statement to the UW Law Community on the Georgia Shootings from Dean Tokaji

Like many of you, I am heartbroken by the murders in the Atlanta area on Tuesday evening. I share the sentiments expressed by campus leadership mourning these deaths and calling for solidarity with the victims and their families. These acts of violence are an affront to the values we hold dear.

The United States has witnessed a disturbing increase in hatred and crimes against Asian and Asian American people in the past year. There is also alarming evidence of increased gender-based violence during the pandemic. UW Law School opposes intolerance, hatred, and violence in all of its forms. We are committed to creating a welcoming community for people who embody a rich diversity of identities, experiences, backgrounds, and perspectives.

Any member of the UW Law community who is negatively affected by these events may seek help from the resources mentioned in the University’s statement, or get in touch with me or other faculty and staff. It is all of our responsibility, but especially that of those of us in leadership positions, to help us move toward a society that is free from hatred and violence.
