SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. – The American Red Cross and their partners are encouraging Wisconsin residents to make appointments this spring for home fire preparedness planning and free smoke alarm installations. It’s part of a national initiative to make thousands of families safer.
This includes community-wide events in May focusing on Milwaukee, Sun Prairie, Fond du Lac and La Crosse.
Sun Prairie area residents in need can sign up for a free smoke alarm installation and home fire safety plan this May.
“Most people don’t realize they only have two minutes to escape a home fire – and that smoke alarms need to be replaced every 10 years,” said Kyle Kriegl, Southwest Wisconsin Chapter Executive Director, American Red Cross. “Please consider signing up for a home fire safety appointment, at your home or for a loved one. Taking advantage of these free resources has proven to keep families safe and prepared.”
Residents who need assistance can visit their website or call 608-232-7468 to schedule an appointment for a free smoke alarm installation this May. Installations will be scheduled during the month, including focused home appointment visits on May 11 in Sun Prairie.
During the 20-minute home visits, Red Cross volunteers and partners such as the Sun Prairie Fire Department will also share information on the causes of home fires, how to prevent them, what to do if a fire starts and how to create an escape plan.
Residents across Wisconsin are eligible for these free life-saving alarms and resources.
