During the 2020-21 academic year, UW Law School Moot Court Teams excelled in multiple virtual competitions.
“Due to the pandemic, all the competitions were virtual this year, which was an added challenge that teams have not faced in previous years,” said Jesse Castañeda, Moot Court student President. “The fact that we had so many students succeed during these competitions shows their resilience and dedication to their field.”
Four Moot Court teams advanced to the semi-final rounds of their competitions. Three teams advanced to the final round and took second place, and one team took third after the semi-finals. The teams were:
- Sarah Ghazi-Moradi and Madeleine King won second place in the regional competition for the Duberstein Bankruptcy Moot Court Competition.
- Samhita Collur and Corinne Duffy finished in second place in the Seigenthaler-Sutherland Cup National First Amendment Moot Court Competition. Collur was also individually awarded Best Oralist based on her performance in the competition’s two preliminary rounds.
- Erin Bartenstein and Ashleigh Johnson advanced to the final round of the Herbert Wechsler National Criminal Moot Court Competition, placing second.
- Emma Contino and Michael Jurkash advanced to the semi-final round and then competed in the consolation round of the National Tax Moot Court Competition. Based on their performance in the consolation round, they took third place in the competition.
Three teams progressed to the quarterfinal round and one team advanced to the round of 32. They were:
- Elise Ashley and Kyle Clark competed in the quarterfinal round of the New York City Bar Association National Moot Court Competition.
- Caroline Rogers and Emma Woods advanced to the round of 32 in the ABA Law Student Division National Appellate Advocacy Competition.
- Courtney Evans and Hannah Pollard-Garber participated in the quarterfinal round of the Federal Bar Association Thurgood Marshall Memorial Moot Court Competition.
- Max Bogost and Taylor Lovett advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Frank A. Schreck Gaming Law Moot Court Competition.
Other highlights of the 2020-21 academic season were:
- Mike Jurkash and Emma Contino placed third in the National Tax Moot Court Competition.
- Madeleine King won Best Oralist for the Regional Duberstein Bankruptcy Moot Court Competition.
