Despite COVID-19, the University of Wisconsin Mock Trial Program sent six teams to competitions during the 2020-21 school year.

Instead of traveling throughout the United States to various competitions, students practiced and conducted a two-hour trial virtually using Zoom.

“I’m really grateful I had the opportunity to compete virtually,” said Mason Higgins, 2L.

Although there were some challenges unique to a virtual mock trial competition, Higgins is happy to have had the experience.

“It’s definitely harder to be persuasive through a screen, but I’m really glad I had this opportunity to argue through cyberspace in a learning environment,” Higgins said. “It was great practice adjusting on the fly.”

While challenging, the virtual competition also allowed students to stay connected during an otherwise isolating pandemic.

“Perhaps best of all was working with a team and developing relationships and forming friendships during a time when most of us felt isolated,” said Kate Leverich, 3L. “That was really special to me and my teammates.”
